Free Range & Organic Chickens
Are All The Rage!

By George Brozowski

Why did the chicken cross the road? Why, to live at Petaluma Poultry and become one the happiest and then greatest tasting chickens anywhere. Petaluma Poultry is the home of Rocky The Range Chickens, Rocky Jr. and Rosie the Organic Chicken.

The quest for a more wholesome and better tasting chicken started back in 1986 when several of the California Super-star chefs approached Sonoma Native and Petaluma Poultry owner, Allen Shainsky, and challenged him to create a more flavorful, free-range chicken equal to those the chefs had used while cooking and training in Europe. Shainsky accepted the challenge and traveled to the Loire Valley in France to research European husbandry methods.

After many months of work, Allen returned home and with his partner, Dick Krengel, a practicing nutritionist, developed a perfect diet and growing process that would in 1987 become "Rocky The Range Chicken".

Rocky's vegetarian diet of corn and soybean flakes gives him that old fashioned flavor. Rocky is never fed any animal byproducts, or given antiobiotics and enjoys a spacious, stress free environment filled with natural sunshine as well as the ability to forage outdoors.

Petaluma Poultry is a vertically integrated company that owns, operates and tightly quality controls all aspects of production from hatching the eggs to milling the feed to the final delivery. Eggs come in and 21 days later they hatch. One day old chicks head off to the range where they are raised until they are approximately 70 days old and weigh in between 4 3/4 and 5 1/2 pounds at which time they are processed. They are shipped the very same day to insure freshness.

Rocky Jr. was created to provide a smaller version of the antibiotic free, more flavorful chicken. Rocky Jr. is smaller than Rocky the Range Chicken and though not allowed to forage outdoors, he is given generous space to roam indoors and is fed the same vegetarian as Rocky the Range Chicken.

Rocky's sister Rosie, on the other hand, is a bird of a different feather. On January 14, 1999, Rosie became one of the first USDA approved certified organic chicken to be introduced in the marketplace. Rosie eats only 100% certified organic corn and soybean flakes grown in soil free of pesticides and commercial fertilizers for a period of three years. Rosie is also allowed to roam and forage outdoors within a fenced pen and is raised according to an organic growing protocol independently verified and certified by Oregon Tilth, a third party certifier.

Petaluma Poultry produces its products through sustainable agriculture methods.

Happy chickens with old-fashioned flavor produced by a company that is sensitive to the environment, yum! It is definitely time to eat.
